Preventive Maintenance

Maintenance costs (fuel, replacement parts, labour, etc.) usually accout for a large proportion of what we spend on a monthly basis as professionals who own and operate motor vehicles. However, while we read every tag and recite the prices to our favourite products in the supermarket we usually ignore the ways in which we continue to waste thousands of dollars on repairs that could have been avoided by changing the way we go about maintaining one of our most prized assets.

When it comes to maintenence management there are typically two types, either Run-to-Failure or Preventive Maintenance. Run-to-failure is a reactive management technique that waits for machine or equipment failure before any maintenance action is taken. It is in true a no-maintenance approach to managing assets. Research* indicates that the majority of motor owners in the Kingston Metropolitan Region (KMR) utilise this method to maintain their vehicles. However, it is the most expensive method of maintenance management. As such, individuals who participated in our research cited the following problems:

Difficulty sourcing parts at the last minuteCosts associated with overtime/ emergency work and specialist labourPossible damage to related components due to failureAdditional costs incurred during vehicle down-time

On the other hand there is Preventive Maintenance, which includes tests, measurements, adjustments, and parts replacement, performed specifically to prevent faults from occurring. It is designed to preserve and restore equipment reliability by replacing worn components before they actually fail. Preventive maintenance activities include partial or complete overhauls at specified periods, oil changes, lubrication and so on.

Our preventive maintenence program was designed to eliminate up to 35% of maintenance expenditures that are wasted by individuals using the Run-to-Failure management technique by:

Eliminating unscheduled breakdowns caused by equipment or system failures.Increasing manpower utilization and the capacity of our service providersReducing maintenance expenditures using our competitor indexing pricing technique, subscription business model and PartsPool payment feature
