Vehicles today possess complex computer and electronic systems, therefore mechanics need to have a broader base of knowledge than in the past. Today, integrated electronic systems and complex computers regulate vehicles and their performance while on the road. With the rapid advancement in technology, the mechanic's job has evolved from purely mechanical, to include electronic technology. They must be able to work with electronic diagnostic equipment, digital manuals, and reference materials.

Research* has indicated that the majority of mechanics in the Jamaican automotive sector are still grappling with these changes and as such, individuals who participated in our research* cited the following problems:

Having to spend on the same maintenance item because of a misdiagnosed problem or ineffective repairs with no guarantee/ warrantyFear of having a breakdown and anxiety because of lack of information about repairs being done and awareness about issues relating to the proper care and maintenance of their vehiclesLow quality workmanship stemming from limited training and certification opportunities and access to new technology (diagnostic tools, etc.), as well as a lack awareness about modern repair techniques and troubleshooting procedures.

When seeking to create solutions to these and other problems we realized that, in order to provide our members with a service that would give them value for their money and sustain a high level of satisfaction, we had to take control of the entire maintenance planning process, not just provide higher quality repair and tune-up services at competitive rates. We had to develop a comprehensive preventive maintenance program that would help our members maintain their vehicles with the goals of maximum performance, economy, and reliability.
